Our Story


James & Charlie Garnham


James and Charlie took ownership of The Five Bells Inn in December 2017. James is a pub and bar manager by trade who has worked all over the country for big name brands and small independents before returning to his home village of Clyst Hydon, Devon. James runs the pub on a day to day basis and creates that wonderful customer experience for all our guests.

Charlie is a marketing professional with years of experience in the digital marketing field; you will find her behind all the pub's social media accounts. Together they live in Exeter with their cat, Olivia.

James' brother, Paul, runs the village cricket team and Mum, Ro, is an avid regular in the pub as she still lives in the village.

Ian Webber

Head Chef

Previously Head Chef at the two Michelin starred Gidleigh Park at Chagford for 6 years and a former winner of Taste of the West's ‘South West Chef of the Year’ competition in 2006, Ian was also Executive Head Chef of Abode Exeter for a year before joining the Five Bells in November 2013.

Ian lives in Honiton and is a father of three. Joining the team here was a perfect opportunity to balance family life with work and approach cooking from a slightly different and more hands on perspective. His motivation now is to produce delicious, simple, seasonal dishes and pub favourites with a stylish twist and to help extend the reach of good food and good hospitality to a wider audience.
